BeYogi recommends a sustainable approach to yoga with SAYF!

Sustainable Asana Yoga Foundation (SAYF) is an online educational program and community that will deepen your knowledge of the body as it applies to yoga. Our 20 hour online training* and SAYF certification specializes in anatomy, human movement mechanics, and how to reduce the risk of yoga injury. Why? So students can sustain a practice long enough to benefit from the psychological and personal/spiritual benefits of yoga.

Our program will help you to:

  • Gain a practical and yoga focused understanding of human movement.
  • Create inclusive classes with options and accommodations for different bodies and different levels of fitness.
  • Understand and respect the risks associated with some asana.
  • Understand when and if your body is ready for more advanced asana.

SAYF is a 20 Hour program that can be eligible for continuing education (CE hrs) for a variety of organizations including YA and ACE.

OK OK OK. You've already invested in teacher training, and you are an experienced practitioner and teacher. SO WHY would you want to take the SAYF training!?

Not all classes or trainings include human movement mechanics applied to asana.

In other words, this could either be amazing and new information for you, or it could really supplement the movement education you already have! The loss of students to acute and chronic injury is a hidden problem for many studios. Many teacher training programs do not cover biomechanics or applied anatomy. How often have you heard "I'm not flexible enough", "yoga is too slow, or too fast", "I was doing yoga until I hurt my back, or knee...."? How often have you had a new student in class that just never came back and you don't know why?! We believe EVERY teacher will benefit from SAYF Training, so that every student has the opportunity to sustain their practice long enough to find the deepest benefits of yoga. And, so when a doctor tells their patient "try yoga, its good for you", it really is the case.

As a studio owner, I've consistently struggled to find new teachers that are well trained in biomechanics applied to asana. Many teachers come with a depth of knowledge in yoga, years of experience, and are great teachers by many other standards. However, my student population has come to really value teaching that honors every body by providing accessible options that emphasize varying intensity, load, and ROM. SAYF allows our studio community to have consistently reliable guidance, while still offering a diversity of teaching styles.

Our Training is a in-depth collection of expertise on Sustainable Asana

We have decades of personal and professional expertise in yoga, anatomy, human movement mechanics, bodywork, personal training, ethics, and language and options that make yoga asana accessible. When it comes to yoga trainings, there are zillions. And a lot of the information can be contradictory or confusing. That's why we have collected the most commonly agreed upon facts and findings from peer reviewed research and experts in the fields of human movement, anatomy, inclusive language, and yoga. Through years of work and study we have put together SAYF Principles and Guidelines that support teachers to deeply understand human movement mechanics, improve body awareness, and offer options for more accessible classes to reduce the likelihood of yoga injury.

I started my career in bodywork and movement therapy through yoga and endurance athletics. I count myself lucky that I grew within a yoga practice that was informed by these principles. Not only did it inspire me professionally, but I attribute my lack of injury to my informed personal movement practice. I use these SAYF guidelines in my day to day life, as well as, my yoga & fitness classes, personal training sessions, and as educational tools for my bodywork clients who are often recovering from chronic pain or injury.
